So close, yet so far away

Tonight, yours truly embarks on a five-day trip up to the Berkshires, meaning that I’ll actually be in the same state as Boston for Friday’s season opener against the Stars. Granted, that means almost nothing since the game will be held in Dallas.

Although it’ll be nice to (hopefully) be able to see the game on local TV, the part of the Berkshires I’m going to (Hancock) is a virtual no-mans land from a technological standpoint. For all the ski resorts I’ve stayed in up in the New England area (ironic note: I don’t ski), I’ve yet to find one that has broadband capabilities…not even in the lobby area. And, when I was up there last in 2005, we were so deeply embedded in the mountains that we had to follow our Sherpa guides and drive down just to get a cell phone signal. I can usually do some decent web surfing from my Blackberry but that backup plan is moot when there’s no cell phone tower nearby to hitch a ride off of. I don’t anticipate anything’s changed in two years.

Fortunately, I’ve got a dial up plan from work to fall back on but that may also be moot since we’ll be on a family vacation. Ever try explaining to your wife the need to update your non-revenue generating web site while trying to concurrently bond with your family? Ain’t happening. I’ll certainly try to do it but I may be lucky just to see either the Friday Dallas game or the Saturday night Coyotes match.

So stay tuned. Any updates this weekend may be published in morse code.
