The dawn of a new era

Someone mentioned it an article the other day (Boston Globe?) that the dominant Bruins we see today (the ones that were 14-3-4 and 32 points going into Wednesday’s Sabres game) are the ones that were born in game six of last year’s playoff series with the Canadiens.  To expand on their point, it was the series where the Bruins shed their regular season futility against the Habs, culminating in an emotional and exciting sixth game where, dammit, it looked like the Bruins might pull off the upset in seven games.

But it wasn’t to be.  However, it really didn’t matter.  The new Bruins had come of age and they showed the Canadiens what they were capable of doing.  This year, they’re showing the entire NHL.

“Let the kids play” was the rallying cry and, boy, has it paid off.  Tim Thomas and Marc Savard aside, it’s not the veterans that are being talked about, it’s the kids.  Chara, Ryder, Sturm, Yelle and other veterans have been mostly afterthoughts thus far.  It’s been Lucic, Kessel, Krejci, and Blake Wheeler who have been grabbing the headlines.  If the Bruins go far in the playoffs this year, this video may be considered to be the defining moment of the 2008-09 Bruins.  If so, the image of the screaming, grizzly-looking guy in the blue shirt will also be forever etched in our memories.

It’s an exciting time to be a Bruins fan right now.  My regret is that I don’t live in the Boston area and can’t enjoy the energy generated at the games.  Even though I haven’t been writing much, for the first time ever I’ve been able to enjoy parts of, if not all of, every Bruins game so far.  God, it’s been a blast.

I hope they keep up this pace for a long time.  I see no reason why they can’t.

NOTE: R.I.P Bep Guidolin, former Bruins player & coach, as well as Greatest Bruin Name #9died Monday at the age of 82.  At the age of 16, I was in my junior year of high school, struggling with dating and concentrating on getting my driver’s license.  Guidolin was skating with the Bruins.  Rest in peace, Bep.
