Tuukka with the shuuttoutt!
What better way for the supposed goalie of the future to make his 2008-2009 debut than by posting a shutout? Not to take anything away from Tuukka Rask, but the team played solid defense in front of the net and kept the garbage goals to a minimum…a pleasant alternative to the last couple of games that saw Tim Thomas flailing around numerous times to try to protect the puck from slithering in behind him.
It’s probably too soon to see if this is going to affect a trade decision regarding Manny Fernandez (or, less likely, Tim Thomas). However, a couple more starts like this (assuming he gets them) and you have to wonder if the Bruins…provided the right opportunity…would choose to trade a more establsihed goalie for, maybe, some left-handed scoring punch. The boys in the NESN booth has been promoting the idea of Doug Weight, which may not be too bad of an idea, especially if the Islanders want to add a decent goalie to their team for the rest of their year and possibly sign him to timeshare with DiPietro next season. We’ll see…but in the meantime, the Bruins face off against the Canadiens today in an afternoon game that may get overlooked due to the Super Bowl.

“It’s probably too soon to see if this is going to affect a trade decision regarding Manny Fernandez (or, less likely, Tim Thomas)” - Maybe yesterday could have been a showcase game for Rask himself for a possible trade - just maybe.

Nah, can’t see it. Thomas and Fernandez are both unrestricted free agents next year. I can see them signing Thomas, letting Fernandez go and then bringing Rask into the timeshare.

But what if a team wanted Rask and was willing to give a great player we could use this year to get The Cup - Not always going to have a chance at the cup like we do this year - would we trade Rask to better our chances. He may be goalie of the future but in reality our future is this year.
