If you have DirecTV and were hoping to watch the opener tonight, you’re f*cked
I had a funny feeling the DirecTV-Versus feud would impact me, but I didn’t think it would be so soon. In case you didn’t know, back in August DirecTV couldn’t come to an agreement with Versus to continue carrying the channel. Usually I’m impartial to these kind of disputes, but what makes this nasty is that Versus is owned by Comcast and with Comcast and DirecTV being bitter rivals, you know this isn’t going to end well. Update: I also find it despicable that the NHL is siding with Versus/Comcast in this dispute by pushing website visitors to request DirecTV to reinstate the Versus channel.
I think that it would be in the NHL’s best interest to make their GameCenter Live service available for free for at least the first week of the season, or at least until DirecTV resolve their dispute. This would at least provide an alternative for Bruins, Capitals, Sharks and Avalanche fans / DirecTV subscribers who will otherwise be blacked out of their team’s season openers.
